Program Overview
The National Prescribing Service Limited (NPS) is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. NPS is an independent, non-profit member-based organisation, who works in partnership with health professionals, consumers, government and the pharmaceutical industry for Quality Use of Medicines.NPS provides accurate, balanced, evidence-based information and services to consumers to assist patient better manage their medicines to improve their health and wellbeing.
NPS Facilitator Program
NPS supports health professionals with education and information through the NPS Facilitator program, run in partnership with the local Divisions of General Practice in Queensland.Each Division has trained NPS Facilitators who deliver one on one educational visits with General Practitioners (GPs) to deliver key therapeutic messages. NPS provide the NPS Facilitators with specialised training in effectively delivering key messages and evidence on clinical therapeutics to GPs.
NPS Facilitators engage with the GPs on a one-to-one level and discuss information and evidence relating to a therapeutic topic. Visits are approximately 30 minutes in duration, are provided free of charge, at a time and location suitable for the GP.
Educational visits contribute to continuing professional development and also qualify as an activity for the Quality Prescribing Initiative (QPI) of the Practice Incentives Program (PIP).

- NPS Radar Timely, independent, evidence-based information on new drugs, research and PBS listings. Published regularly throughout the year.
- Australian Prescriber independent publication providing readily accessible information about drugs and therapeutics. It covers topics assisting doctors, dentists, pharmacists and students.
- Health Professional factsheets Short, topical fact sheets which are published from time to time to clarify medicines issues as they arise.
- Nurses Update An email alert keeping nurses and their peak organisations up to date with what’s happening at NPS.
- Pharmacy Letter Independent, evidence-based information about over-the-counter medicines for all Australian pharmacists. This is no longer published but you can still download the back issues.
- Prescribing Practice Review Independent, evidence-based information about therapeutics mailed free of charge to all Australian GPs, pharmacists and selected medical specialists, approximately 4 times a year.
- NPS Online Education To promote and support Quality Use of Medicines.
- Consumer factsheets A series of practical information sheets on specific topics related to managing your medicines.
- Medicine Update When it comes to new medicines, how do you decide if ‘new’ is ‘better’? Medicine Update helps you to answer this question as new medicines become available on the PBS.
- MedicinesTalk Written by consumers for consumers, MedicinesTalk is a free quarterly newsletter that gives you reliable, accurate information and useful hints on managing your medicines.
- Member update NPS Member update is a regular publication sent to our Member Organisations.
- Peer2Peer is a quarterly newsletter, supporting peer educators to help seniors manage their medicines.
