OVERVIEW

The Nursing in General Practice (NiGP) program is funded by the Department of Health and Ageing. The program is one of a number of programs that make up a consolidated scholarship and support scheme for nursing and allied health.

Aim

The aim of the NiGP program is to support the employment of nurses in general practice to relieve workforce pressure in general practice; improve the prevention and management of chronic disease; and improve access to, and the quality and integration of, patient care.

Objectives

The objectives of the program are to:

  • build the capacity of the nursing workforce with an emphasis on the increased value of the role nursing plays in general practice
  • support extended roles for practice nurses
  • promote effective recruitment and retention strategies.

All 17 Queensland divisions of general practice have chosen to participate in the Nursing in General Practice program for 2009-2010.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES FOR 2009/10

  • Implement a nationally consistent orientation program to provide nurses new to general practice with the knowledge and baseline skills required to practice in general practice setting.
  • Work with university schools of nursing to explore opportunities for clinical placement of nursing students in general practice.
  • Provide education and training for practice nurses targeted at supporting advanced practice particularly in areas of chronic disease management, health promotion and prevention.
  • Explore recruitment strategies for practices not currently employing nurses.
  • Work with practices interested in establishing a nurse led clinic or to support advanced roles for nurses in general practice.
  • Support the promotion and distribution of the national nursing in general practice workforce survey.
