Overview

The Australian General Practice Network (AGPN) has been funded by the Department of Health and Ageing – Drugs Strategies Branch to implement through the Primary Health Care Comorbidity Network Pilot Program and to administer the Building on "Can Do" Grants Program for the divisions.

The State Based Organisation (SBO), GPQ acts as a resource to assist the divisions achieve their objectives as outlined in their funding application for the Building on "Can Do" Grants Program.

Objectives

The primary objective of the Comorbidity Network Pilot Program is to build partnerships with the alcohol and other drug (AOD) sector at national and state levels and to encourage multi-disciplinary approaches to the management of people with Comorbidity through outreach, liaison and negotiation with allied health professionals outside of the general practice setting.

How will the network achieve this:

The network will build specifically on the activities that form part of the National Comorbidity Initiative (NCI) and the Improved services for People with Drug and Alcohol Problems and Mental Health Initiative (Improved Services Measure).

The expected outcomes of the Pilot Porgram are:
  1. Improved service delivery to clients with mental health and substance use Comorbidity by way of:
  2. Improved liaison and intersectoral collaboration between
 
  • State AOD services
  • State Mental Health services
  • Non government health service sector
  • Community support groups and service providers and 
  • Community and carer organisations.
Background information:

The Improved Services for People with Drug and Alcohol Problems and Mental Illness (Improved Services Measure) initiative aims to build the capacity of non-government drug and alcohol treatment services to effectively address and treat coinciding mental illness and substance abuse. The initiative forms of the Commonwealth’s component of the Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG) National Action Plan on Mental Health 2006 – 2011.

A supporting component of the initiative is the Cross Sectoral Support and Strategic Partnership (CSSSSP) project. The CSSSP project complements the capacity building program and involves funding state based support organisations to assist services to build partnerships with the wider health sector, identify workforce development and training opportunities and to undertake service improvement activities.
