Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people suffer worse health than non-Indigenous Australians.

Chronic disease is responsible for a major part of the life expectancy gap. It accounts for some two thirds of the premature deaths among Indigenous Australians.

All-cause mortality rate is 2.1 times higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people than for non-Indigenous Australians.

12% of the total burden of disease and injury from smoking.

Incidence of end-stage renal disease has more than tripled over the last decade.

7% of all deaths and 6% of the total burden of disease from alcohol.

Lower rates of access to acute care investigations and procedures.
