Overview
GPAC's mission is to improve the health outcomes of Queensland people through better communication, coordination and collaboration between government agencies, general practice organisations, general practitioners and the non-government sector. GPAC aims to:
- Provide formal consultation mechanism between Queensland Health and GPs
- Facilitate GP involvement in development of health policy and strategies
- Facilitate cooperation and collaboration between key stakeholders
At the commencement of 2007, the General Practice Advisory Council (GPAC) identified a number of priorities for progression, one of those being, identification and progression of ways in which to increase the workforce capacity of general practice, particularly throughout Queensland.
The Mater/ University of Queensland Centre for Primary Health Care Innovation was engaged by Queensland Health on behalf of GPAC to conduct a literature review and formulate a report on behalf of GPAC regarding the identification of new and innovative approaches to increasing primary health care capacity. In addition to this, the Mater Centre also undertook a rapid review of information relating to new approaches to service delivery relevant to general practice capacity, linking primary and secondary care. A range of Key Informant Interviews were conducted by the Mater Centre with the GPAC partners in order to identify current innovative models of primary care and inform the research undertaken by the Centre. The final report from the Mater Centre was cleared for distribution in June, 2008.
GPAC is conducting a level of scoping with regards to existing and evolving roles within general practice and the ways in which these roles can increase workforce capacity. This scoping is taking place by way of a stakeholder survey and consultation document. A number of key informant interviews have also taken place.
As a culmination of the Workforce Capacity in General Practice priority area, GPAC will be hosting a General Practice Workforce Summit in September 2009. This Summit will bring together the GPAC partners as well as other key stakeholders and aims to develop a set of key principles and action statements for general practice workforce development in Queensland. It will also showcase innovative general practice workforce models across Queensland
